Join The Griot Museum of Black History as we debut the St. Louis premiere of Lift Every Voice, an exhibition featuring 15 hooked rugs inspired by Elizabeth Catlett’s 1947 series I Am the Black Woman. For the exhibit opening, we are excited to host guest curator Maddy Fraioli to share insight into the process of creating these pieces.
These works of textile art were completed during the Covid-19 pandemic by 14 women across the continent. The artists hope, as Catlett did, that their collected work “be of service,” and “work to the end that love, peace, justice, and equal opportunity prevail all over the world.” The St. Louis exhibition will run from June 8th-August 17th, 2024 at The Griot Museum of Black History.
Free for Members, $10 for General Public (click the link to purchase an Adult Ticket)

Experience the untold story of the 1933 Funsten Nutpickers Strike in St. Louis. Black women, facing low wages, unsafe conditions, and Jim Crow segregation, organized over 2,000 workers across five factories. With a brick in one hand and a bible in the other, their bold act of solidarity positioned St. Louis at the intersection of workers’ and civil rights.
