Dear white people (letter #3)

Published by the STL American - December 31, 2024

Dear white people,

I’ll never say I speak for all people of African descent or for other people of color. However. I’ve been in many spaces across the country since my last letter to  you five years ago. I can say that there’s a lot of anger and outrage towards white people right about now. You are blamed for the deteriorating state of the country. The tolerance of most non-whites is low. We are sick and tired. Literally.

You may not be visibly sporting MAGA gear, but it’s painfully clear from your actions that you believe the systems of racial oppression are appropriate and should remain intact. White fragility is a crutch, and we all know it.

It’s not just the nearly 70 million who voted for trump in November. It is those of you who voted for the Harris-Walz ticket but for whom Dr. Martin Luther King called the “great stumbling block” in the stride towards freedom. You may not be visibly sporting MAGA gear, but it’s painfully clear from your actions that you believe the systems of racial oppression are appropriate and should remain intact. White fragility is a crutch, and we all know it.

This is not about guilt or shaming; this is about the measurable lack of progress in this country over the last decade when it comes to racial equity and class divisions. You had a direct or indirect hand in ensuring policies, protocols and laws favored white supremacy and privilege. The waiting game for justice and equality is always in overtime.

Police murder of citizens is unabated, particularly the killing of Black citizens. Affirmative action and other DEI programs have been gutted or dismantled. Racial health disparities persist. This country still boasts the highest incarceration rate in the world. The gap in wage and income disparities are ever widening. The brutal character of poverty leaves people unhoused and hungry. The list of quality-of-life indicators that remain unresolved  goes on and on.

The election of trump is an unequivocal assertion of whiteness in a country that is browning every day. A majority non-white world is watching with apprehension and disgust. The election has catapulted the U.S. into a new era where trump’s imperial arrogance will fuel internal race and class divisions that will be unparalleled.

The president-election’s actions and declarations are already causing chaos. There are 59 threats that trump has promised on Day One of his administration. They range from threats of mass deportation of immigrants from the US. to unjoining the World Health Organization. Threats and more threats. This is not democratic governance; this is a dictatorship.

Countries like Canada, China, Panama, Mexico and Greenland have been called out by trump. European countries are bracing for the unpredictability of a president already labeled as mentally unstable. Like a true dictator, anyone who gets in the way of trump carrying out his agenda for his billionaire buddies will feel the full force of his rage. He will have immunity for any crimes committed as president. Again.

White liberals have been accused of hiding behind the efforts of genuine anti-racists and the covers are off. As trump ascends the throne on November 20, you’ll be seen as co-conspirators in the plan for white dominance. You’ll have to take responsibility for this country’s slippery slope into oligarchy, authoritarianism and yes, fascism (not necessarily in this order.)

The kind of hell that will rain on this country will be unprecedented. As fear, anger and hate intensify, so will the levels of violence. There will be no hiding places for anyone. Desperate measures will be adopted to survive. Dr. King reminded us that if white liberals are offended by the righteous actions for justice, “they never were really our friends.”

Per the last letter from me, you were to engage your white network in education around the dangers of racism to democracy and get them moving. You failed that mission, but there’s still time to redeem yourselves and prove Dr. King gloriously wrong. You must act now—the inauguration day is fast approaching.

When Converging Financial Trends Collide

The announcement of record retail stores closing during the COVID pandemic is probably a distant memory, except for those whose favorite restaurant shuttered. The trend never really stopped and over 6,000 businesses are expected to close this year. High inflation rates and flat wages are behind the disturbing trend that neither presidential candidate offered a realistic solution to voters during their campaigns. We must make this an issue after the inauguration
